18th Century Shirt- Collar I

Description

Here is a close-up on the collar of my latest project- an 18th century man's white linen shirt. I've just put on the collar but I still need to add sleeves, sew up the sides, and hem it.

I've placed a dark blue piece of wool inside the shirt so you can see the detailing of the neck opening. The fine needlework at the opening of the neck is done in white linen thread and is called faggoting (yes, really). The purpose of these stitches is to reinforce the neck slit and prevent it from tearing open- and also to look pretty!

I'll have pictures of this shirt on ~WanderingIrishman once it's completed.
